I am not sure if this question belongs here.

I am searching for a (reliable) commentary or more information on King Josiah. I would like some insight into how he could know the way of G-d considering who his father and grandfather were. Does the number 8 carry any significance into his becoming king? I found one commentary but it definately was not from a Jewish scholar or even a Jewish perspective.

I knew you would come to the rescue

Mimi, someone told me there was a book written about him and published about two years ago - no title or publisher given. I have searched the major Jewish publishers and could not find it. I know this will be difficult but I just can't let this go by. At a time when there was no Torah and certainly no one (mentioned in Tanach) who was a G-dly role model for him, he was drawn to G-d. Yes, I am a firm believer in Divine assistance, but there is nothing mentioned in Torah without a lesson for us If possible can you get a kabbalistic meaning for the number 8? This is personal for me.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Ilana

I am currently studying with Dr Rachel Turkienicz. I no nothing about King Josiah. However, she may very well have something available on a CD. We are currently studying King Saul, and King David. This is her web site, if you want to inquire directly with her assistant. http://www.learningwithrachael.com/

I am spell bound by her teachings. The women I study with (about 30) have been studying with her for a long time.

Artscroll.com came out with a terrific translation of Kings. I plan on obtaining one myself soon (thanks to your question, which precipitated my discovery!), so if you purchase it as well, we can learn and exchange information on this thread!

King Josiah was the son of Amon. He became king at the age of 8, following the his father's decease . At the age of 24, the High Priest Chilkiyahu discovered one of the twelve Torah Scrolls that Moses had written. The newly discovered Torah Scroll was opened up to the portion which discusses the retribution and exile meted out to the Jews as a result of their idol worship.

King Josiah was very moved by this incident, and resolved to root out all idol worship in his kingship. To ensure the total eradication of this terrible practice, he instructed officers to visit each individual home, and remove any idols found therein. At that time, the populance was so "addicted" to idol worship, that some attempted to hide their idols between the doors and the doorposts, in a manner that hid them when the doors were opened for the officers.

King Josiah was highly praised for his valiant efforts to bring Jews back to pure service of G-d. In Kings II, 34;25 tells us that "Like him there was no king before him, that turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his might, according to all of the Torah of Moses, and neither after him rose another like him".

Candybar!

Thanks for the link. From what I read of your teacher, it seems she teaches a lot about the Prophets so it is likely you will learn more of King Josiah when you get to Zechariah. I am glad to see you are involved in a class

Oh Mimi, that is greeeeat! I will order it now, but I don't know the name of the book. I get so side-tracked at Artscroll - so much to see.

Can you point me to the book? So many questions!

Considering his father and grandfather, how does Divine assistance play into Josiah's G-dliness....then if Divine assistance, where does that leave free choice...

This could get very interesting!

Okay Candybar, want to take on another study?

Thank you so much. Looking forard to your insights.

Here's the link, Ilana!

http://www.artscroll.com/Books/rnki.html

King Josiah was admired and honored for his complete repentance following the Torah Scroll incident. Although we certainly cannot accomplish anything at all without Divine assistance, King Josiah achieved his status of "Tzadik"- Righteous, from his absolute and comprehensive repentance. G-d gives us many opportunities to "seize the moment", and see beyond our self imposed limitations. King Josiah rose to the occasion.

Soul stirring moments are not extraordinary; implementing real change in our lives as a response to the gift of momentary inspiration is the stuff of extraordinary, revealing the true capacity for greatness that lies within each Jew. G-d gave King Josiah the tools to serve Him; King Josiah seized the moment, and made concrete and lasting change in his life and his kingship.

Okay Mimi, I ordered the book. It may be six long days before I receive it, so I will hold my questions 'til then. Thank you!
